What is density?

Density is a comparison of how much matter there is in a certain amount of space. Check this slideshare!!

Presentation 'Density #1-3. What is density? Density is a comparison of how much matter there is in a certain amount of space.'

The ‘Dead Sea’ is a lake near Jordan and Palestine that is nearly 10timessaltier than the ocean. It is called the dead sea because it is so salty, no animals can live in it BUT it makes a great sea to float in. The high salt content makes the water VERY dense and you can float in it easily (just like a boat).

PROPERTIES OF MATTER

WHAT IS MATTER?

Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. Look around you, Everything, from the clothes you are wearing to the air you breath is matter.

GENERAL PROPERTIES OF MATTER:

MASS: Amount of matter in an object. It is measured in grams or kilograms.
VOLUME: Amount of space thant an object occupies.  Bigger objects ocuppy more space, so they have more volume. It is measured in litres or millilitres.

So, in summary:
  • element - a basic substance that can't be simplified (hydrogenoxygengold, etc...)
  • atom - the smallest amount of an element
  • molecule - two or more atoms that are chemically joined together (H2, O2, H2O, etc...)
  • compound - a molecule that contains more than one element (H2O, C6H12O6, etc...)
  • When you mix different substances (elements or compounds) you've got a mixture.
