VIDEOS UPLOADED BY OUR CLASSMATES

Soluble or insoluble? This is the question. Marina M. found the solution with these two videos:

Alejandra sent us a complete webpage about separating mixtures:
SEPARATING MIXTURES EXAMPLES

Alba also sent another webpage about the same topic. Pay special attention to the examples of EVAPORATION, DESTILLATION, MAGNETISM OR FILTRATION.
SEPARATING MIXTURES

Laura T. thinks that this video can be very useful to understand the different separation mixtures processes:

Marina M. has found a short and clear video about physical and chemical changes:

Irene wants to share this interesting and complete video too:

SEPARATING DIFFERENT TYPES OF MIXTURES

What are the differences between soluble and insoluble solids?

Which methods can you use to separate soluble solids from liquids?
And which ones are you going to use to separate non soluble solids from liquids?

Can you find any other useful video or any web page about methods of separation?

PHYSICAL vs CHEMICAL CHANGES

  • Read page 53 and watch these videos. Then, prepare a little diagram about chemical changes.
  • Which are the differences between physical and chemical changes?
  • Complete ex. 2 and ex. 3 from page 53.

What is density?

Density is a comparison of how much matter there is in a certain amount of space. Check this slideshare!!

Presentation 'Density #1-3. What is density? Density is a comparison of how much matter there is in a certain amount of space.'

The ‘Dead Sea’ is a lake near Jordan and Palestine that is nearly 10timessaltier than the ocean. It is called the dead sea because it is so salty, no animals can live in it BUT it makes a great sea to float in. The high salt content makes the water VERY dense and you can float in it easily (just like a boat).

PROPERTIES OF MATTER

WHAT IS MATTER?

Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. Look around you, Everything, from the clothes you are wearing to the air you breath is matter.

GENERAL PROPERTIES OF MATTER:

MASS: Amount of matter in an object. It is measured in grams or kilograms.
VOLUME: Amount of space thant an object occupies.  Bigger objects ocuppy more space, so they have more volume. It is measured in litres or millilitres.

So, in summary:
  • element - a basic substance that can't be simplified (hydrogenoxygengold, etc...)
  • atom - the smallest amount of an element
  • molecule - two or more atoms that are chemically joined together (H2, O2, H2O, etc...)
  • compound - a molecule that contains more than one element (H2O, C6H12O6, etc...)
  • When you mix different substances (elements or compounds) you've got a mixture.

PUBERTY

When we are children, boys and girls have a very similar body; but when we enter the puberty our bodies begin to change.Let's going to discover how it happens:

Definition

Puberty is the time in which a child's sexual and physical characteristics mature. It occurs due to hormone changes.

Adolescence is the period between puberty and adulthood. It is a time of psychological maduration, which a person becomes "adult-like" in behaviour. Adolescence is considered to be the period between ages 13 and 19.

Some information

The exact age a child enters puberty depends on a number of different things, such as genes, nutrition, and gender. During puberty, endocrine glands produce hormones that cause body changes and the development of secondary sexual characteristics.

In girls, the ovaries begin to increase production of estrogen and other female hormones.

In boys, the testicles increase production of testosterone.

The adrenal glands produce hormones that cause increased armpit sweating, body odour, acne, and armpit and pubic hair.

PUBERTY IN BOYS

The first sign of puberty in boys is enlargement of both testicles. Afterward, boys will normally experience:
  • Faster growth, especially height
  • Hair growth under the arms, on the face, and in the pubic area
  • Increased shoulder width
  • Growth of the penis, scrotum (with reddening and folding of the skin), and testes
  • Nighttime ejaculations (nocturnal emissions or "wet dreams")
  • Voice changes

PUBERTY IN GIRLS

Breast development is the main sign that a girl is entering puberty. The first menstrual period (menstruation) usually follows within about 2 years.

Before the first menstrual period, a girl will normally have:
  • An increase in height
  • An increase in hip size
  • Clear or whitish vaginal secretions
  • Pubic, armpit, and leg hair growth.

Voluntary or involuntary???

Voluntary and Involuntary Responses
The responses of the nervous system to stimuli may be voluntary or involuntary.
  • Voluntary responses are mainly under conscious control, but some voluntary movements, such as walking, require less conscious attention.

  • There are two types of involuntary response, autonomic and reflex.

    • Autonomic responses regulate the body’s internal environment: hearbeat, intestine movements,...

    • Reflexes mainly affect those muscles that are normally under voluntary control: blinking, sneezing,...      A reflex is an involuntary response to a stimulus, such as withdrawing your hand from a hot surface before you become aware of the heat. Most reflexes are processed in the spine, although some, such as blinking, are processed in the brain. In a spinal reflex, the stimulus signal travels along a sensory nerve to the spinal cord, and a response signal travels back by means of a motor nerve.
